10 Fast Facts About Arrow’s Cloud Services

30 juli 2014

Arrow Electronics entered the cloud race a few years ago with the launch of its cloud services platform—ArrowSphere—by testing the waters with European channel partners first before expanding the program into North America. Although the industry has spawned new types of providers to support cloud computing, IT distributors have a big role to play. Arrow pointed out at one time that traditional channel partners are poised to deliver cloud services because of their alignment to IT and their skills and capabilities around services such as the integration and assessment of applications and security. A recent CompTIA survey found that channel partners plan to use distribution for an array of services, including technical support, aggregation of cloud services, data center accessibility and hosting services, as well as vetting cloud service providers and offerings. Over the past year, Arrow’s Enterprise Computing Solutions segment has focused on bolstering its cloud offerings through new or expanded partnerships. Many of these offerings are tied into other key tech markets, including converged infrastructure, virtualization and big data.  Here is a quick look at Arrow’s latest offerings.

KDE releases ice-cream coloured Plasma 5 just in time for summer

28 juli 2014

Adaptable System Recovery (ASR) for Linux virtual machines

Review Plasma 5, released last week, is a major redesign of the Unix KDE desktop environment and underlying frameworks.

Perhaps the most notable difference is the visual changes, which see KDE embracing a more streamlined, “flat” interface, but it’s also the first version of KDE to be powered by Qt 5 and the recently released KDE Frameworks 5.

Qt was the interface development framework bought and then dumped by Nokia, whose mobile phone business is now owned by Microsoft.

The visual changes and the polish that’s been added to the default Plasma theme is welcome – frankly the default KDE 4 theme has been looking long in the tooth for a while now – but it’s the under-the-hood changes will have a bigger impact on the future of KDE.

Another big feature is a “converged shell”, which is an attempt to realize a unified desktop and device future very similar to the goals of Ubuntu’s Unity shell. The idea is the interface adapts to the hardware – the shell would select Plasma 5 for a laptop but run it on a tablet and it would change to a tablet-based interface. The “converged shell” will be able to select a “shell” as the device changes.

The canonical example is a touch interface on a tablet that switches to a more suitable interface when you plug in a keyboard. It’s a little unclear from the KDE docs what happens if you want to use the touch interface and a keyboard, but presumably that’s possible as well.

For the moment there’s only the Plasma 5 desktop anyway, so all we have is the vision. KDE developers are working on the tablet interface along with an interface for a media centre –

14 Quick Facts on BYOD and Mobile Security

25 juli 2014

While there’s a lot of hype surrounding the bring-your-own-device phenomenon, the rise of BYOD as an officially sanctioned policy is more of a process than an event. A new study found that more than one-fourth of IT professionals said there is limited use of privately owned devices on their networks, but almost a third said their organizations are actively evaluating their BYOD policies. More significantly from the perspective of solution providers in the channel, 25 percent of respondents said their organizations will be increasing their BYOD budgets in the next 12 months, according to the study, which is based on a survey of 1,122 IT pros conducted by the LinkedIn Information Security Community on behalf of Vectra Networks, a malware-detection software provider. The report made it clear that mobile computing is a major IT management challenge that only gets more complex with the introduction of BYOD. That should create a significant amount of demand for outside help from IT service providers. However, that problem doesn’t officially exist until the organization admits there’s a problem worth allocating IT budget dollars to solve. Take a look at how far BYOD has come and what challenges need addressing.

Zeven kletsverhalen over de cloud

21 juli 2014

John Duynhouwer

LibreSSL crypto library leaps from OpenBSD to Linux, OS X, more

12 juli 2014

Adaptable System Recovery (ASR) for Linux virtual machines

The OpenBSD project has released the first portable version of LibreSSL, the team’s OpenSSL fork – meaning it can be built for operating systems other than OpenBSD.

The LibreSSL project, which aims to clean up the buggy and inscrutable OpenSSL code, was founded about two months ago by a group of OpenBSD developers, so it only makes sense that getting it running on that OS would be their priority.

With the release of LibreSSL 2.0.0 on Friday, however, many of the dependencies on OpenBSD have been removed and the library can now be built for various flavors of Linux, Solaris, OS X, and FreeBSD.

Note that this is still considerably fewer platforms that the original OpenSSL library supported. But OpenSSL’s portability approach had become one of extreme overkill, with the code incorporating numerous hacks and workarounds to make it run on such outdated platforms as VMS, OS/2, NetWare, 16-bit Windows, and even DOS.

By comparison, LibreSSL is focusing on Unix-like operating systems for now, although a Windows port may appear in the future.

In a presentation given in May, LibreSSL developer Bob Beck explained that much of the initial work on LibreSSL involved deleting code that only existed to provide support for oddball systems. Between that effort and removing redundant and unused code, the LibreSSL group was able to shrink the size of the OpenSSL codebase by about 23 per cent.

The LibreSSL developers have also worked to get OpenSSL’s unorthodox and inconsistent source code into “kernel normal form” (KNF), a standard C coding style used by the OpenBSD project.

In addition, although the goal of the LibreSSL project is to create a secure, drop-in replacement for OpenSSL, the developers have also tried to undo some of the OpenSSL developers’

Avnet Bolsters Its Network Security Business

11 juli 2014

Avnet Technology Solutions launches a security and networking solutions division in the EMEA to help partners increase opportunities in those markets.

As security becomes a bigger driver of IT strategies, Avnet Technology Solutions (ATS) is positioning itself to better support its global partners by helping them target the growing networking security market as a key opportunity.

One of the most recent moves by Avnet is the launch of its Avnet Security Networking Solutions (ASNS) division in the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa), which will help these partners expand or enter this marketplace by leveraging the IT distributor’s resources and value-added services. This division will be supported by specialist technical and commercial ASNS Competence Centres in EMEA.

The first center is scheduled to launch this quarter in the Netherlands. The center will be an EMEA hub for delivering security and networking services and solutions across the region and will be further supported by Avnet’s local expertise in the field.

A key driver behind the launch of the ASNS division is the rapid adoption of private, hybrid and public cloud solutions, which has changed the sourcing behavior of companies, Miriam Murphy, senior vice president of sales and marketing, Avnet Technology Solutions EMEA, told Channel Insider.

“Server, storage and networking decisions are more and more part of an integrated infrastructure strategy with the different elements optimized to work together in the most efficient way,” Murphy said. “In this process, the classic separation between infrastructure and security sourcing is disappearing as security becomes a key driver of IT strategies. Software-defined data center technology will accelerate this phenomenon in the next years [to come].”

Avnet Technology Solutions will offer three types of network security services in all countries: demand-generation services, enablement-related services such as training and certifications, and business facilitation services such as pre-sales support and professional
